Highland Hardwoods is Green Certified!

Forest Stewardship CounseThe staff at Highland Hardwoods is proud to announce that our company is officially "Green Certified". Highland Hardwoods has always been an environmentally conscious company, since our inception back in 1986. We have worked closely with responsible hardwood lumber producers that practice sustainable forestry techniques. Accordingly we feel that, as stewards of the forest, we have fulfilled our responsibility to the customers we serve. That is something our staff takes a great deal of pride in.

This year we have taken that responsibility "one step further". We have applied for, and received our "Green Certification" from the Forest Stewardship Counsel (FSC). FSC is recognized as the leading organization in the "Green" movement in the Hardwood industry. As we were already following many of the practices necessary to be FSC certified, it was very natural for us to make this move.

What is FSC?

The Forest Stewardship Counsel (FSC) is a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world's forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way. Companies who handle the forest's resources like ourselves, seek certification as a way to assure consumers that we have practiced forestry consistent wit FSC standards. .

Forest Stewardship CounseThe good news is, that we will now be able to offer our customers FSC "Green Certified" Hardwoods & secondary products that meet all he requirements set by the Forest Stewardship Counsel. In the coming months we are planning to incorporate FSC Certified into our wholesale and retail inventories. As the availability of FSC certified stock is somewhat limited, it will only account for a portion of what we carry on site at our yard facility. We will surely welcome and do our best to fill all inquiries and requests for FSC certified lumber in the future.

More information about the Forest Stewardship Counsel, FSC, is available on their website www.fscus.org

The New Children's Museum of New Hampshire

the Children's Museum of New HampshireHighland Hardwoods is pleased to announce our new partnership with the Children's Museum Of New Hampshire - our state's most popular destination for family fun and learning. Highland is the proud sponsor of one of the museum's newest and most exciting major exhibit "Step Into A Story."

Step Into a Story
Presented by Highland Hardwoods

Imagine walking into the pages of a giant picture book and having it spring to life around you. That is the experience you will enjoy in the "Step Into a Story" exhibit. Come in and become a part of the story "The Cats of Mrs. Calamari" by New Hampshire author John Stadler.

the Children's Museum of New Hampshire

Jump up onto the big green couch with a giant mouse, or put costumes on the cats who play starring roles in the story. Pick up the phone and listen to the author tell how he came up with his story ideas. There is even a place to sit and read the book, then compose your own ending on a large magnetic board nearby. This exhibit's many interactive components get everyone excited about reading!

The "new" Children's Museum of New Hampshire opened in July 2008 with triple the exhibit, performance and classroom space, enhanced amenities, fully accessible resources and new exhibits to complement old favorites that have informed and entertained the 1.4 million visitors the Children's Museum has welcomed since its founding nearly 25 years ago.

photoThe museum offers a range of hands-on informal learning opportunities in the areas of science, art, music, math, and more. The museum's unique exhibits have been designed and created by the staff in conjunction with New Hampshire artisans, and all are based on important developmental and educational principles.

Throughout the year, the museum offers a variety of special events including live musical performances, literacy days, workshops, classes and holiday celebrations. The museum hosts Scout overnights and group visits from schools, preschools and homeschool groups. The museum also has a birthday party program and is available for private rental.

photo - Jerry Holt

Customer Highlight:
Jerry Holt

Jerry Holt has not always been a woodworker, but in the last twenty-five years he has acquired quite a talent for carving wood. Starting out selling used furniture from his garage, he opened a furniture business in Maine that thrived for over 35 years. It wasn't until after retirement that Jerry developed his interest in woodworking.

After a chance meeting with a gentleman while traveling to Florida he began his long-standing interest in carving with nothing more than a sharp knife and small chunks of wood. Since then Jerry has expanded his talent in producing small projects including carvings of birds, loons, and other wildlife. For this we would like to recognize Jerry for his unique talents and beautiful work.

Jerry is pictured here with one of his woodcarvings, along with his daughter Catherine Holt, during a recent visit to Highland Hardwoods. Catherine is Development Director of Easter Seals Maine.

Keep up the good work Jerry!
