Grades
Hardwood Plywood is graded on two separate characteristics.
First, the face of the plywood is graded, then the
back face is graded separately. Below you will find
a simplified version of these grades. If you have
any more detailed questions please feel free to
contact us.
FACE:
|
AA
|
This is the highest face grade that is
produced. Used for Architectural paneling,
quality furniture, cabinetry, or any other
application where the best appearance is
needed. This grade may have limited availability
is some species of wood.
|
|
A
|
Most used face grade of plywood. Used when
AA is not required but excellent appearance
is still needed.
|
|
B
|
Used when natural color and characteristics
are desired without losing structural integrity
of the panel.
|
|
C
|
Allows for unlimited color and increased
natural characteristics. Usually panels
are very economical.
|
|
D&E
|
The lowest face grade of plywood. Allows
increased size of natural character marks
as well as larger repair spots in the veneer.
Very rustic appearance.

BACK:
| 1&2 |
These two grades are synonymous with each
other, with grade 1 being the most restrictive.
Both grades provide sound surfaces with
any openings on the back face repaired.
Worm holes 1/16" or smaller are allowed
in these grades.
|
| 3&4 |
Both of these grades permit open defects.
These can be, but not limited to, splits,
bark pockets, and knot holes.

Veneer Cutting Methods
Plywood veneers are typically cut from the log four
different ways. These cuts, or how the veneer is peeled
from a tree, will determine the overall look of the
panel in its completion. Below we show these different
methods and describe how they are made.
|
|
|
|
Core Materials
Did you know that there
are different types of plywood? Most widely
carried are veneer core plywoods which consist of
a core covered on both sides by layers of crossbanding
and a face veneer. Other types include lumber core,
particleboard core and medium density fiberboard.
Each type has its pluses and minuses, but it is good
to note that all plywood is stable and can be stained
and fastened well.

|
 |
|
Sawn wood joined with
glue and faced with veneer.

 |
|
Wood fibers mixed
with resin and wax and pressed into panels
