Need
help determing what the best type
of flooring is for you?
Generally speaking WHERE one is installing hardwood
flooring will determine what type of flooring is used
and how it should be installed:
NOTE:
The following information is a general guideline regarding
proper placement and installation of flooring. Please
defer to specific guidelines of individual manufacturers
when installing different types of flooring.
|
|
APPLICATION:
First or Second Floor
Installation, Plywood Sub-floor
BEST TYPE OF FLOORING:
ANY type of flooring may be installed on these
levels and over this sub-floor.
INSTALLATION:
-
Solid hardwood flooring, pre-finished
or unfinished,
will be stapled or nailed down. Pre-finished
is complete as soon as it is installed while unfinished
requires that the floor be sanded and finished
on sight.
-
Engineered
flooring may also be installed by stapling or
nailing but in some cases it can be floated (glued
on the tongue and groove or click locked while
installing over an approved underlayment).
-
Laminate
flooring may also be floated over an approved
underlayment.

|
|

|
|
|
APPLICATION:
First Floor Installation Over Concrete
BEST TYPE OF FLOORING:
Engineered
or laminate
flooring should be considered when installing in this
situation.
INSTALLATION:
Installations will vary with different manufacturers
when dealing with Engineered flooring, sometimes floated,
sometimes glued down.
-
Laminate
flooring will always be floated using an underlayment
that includes a moisture barrier.
-
Engineered
flooring or laminate flooring can be installed
over radiant heat in concrete but manufacturers
will vary in recommending what type of wood to
use and proper installation.

|
|

|
|
|
APPLICATION:
Below Grade/Basement Installation
BEST TYPE OF FLOORING:
Engineered or laminate flooring should be considered
in this case as well. Laminate is preferred because
basements have a tendency to hold more humidity.
INSTALLATION:
Some caution should be used when installing engineered
hardwood in a basement because excess moisture can
cause cupping and de-lamination over time. Use of
a dehumidifier may be considered to keep the humidity
as regulated as possible.
