Photo-FlooringEngineered flooring is constructed by laminating a multi-laminate backer with a real wear layer of hardwood. Thickness of engineered flooring can range from 5/16" to 5/8" and widths can range between 2-1/4" to 6" wide.

Wear layer thickness can vary and should be taken into account when purchasing. Engineered flooring will have a shorter average length due to the way it is manufactured.

Usually engineered flooring is pre-finished with a four-sided bevel but there are some unfinished engineered products.

Applications

Typical installation is on, above or below grade, (1st floor, 2nd floor, or basement), and can be installed over concrete or a plywood sub-floor. Engineered flooring may be floated (glued on the tongue and groove but not adhered to the sub-floor), glued or stapled. Many engineered floors may be installed over radiant heat but please be aware of specific requirements from the manufacturer. Installation recommendations will vary among manufacturers.

Grades

Engineered flooring grades are very similar to pre-finished flooring but with one exception. In an engineered form there are usually 4 to 5 five standard lengths that are made. Average lengths are significantly shorter, generally around 18"- 24" with a maximum of 3'.

See samples of Mirage Red Oak grades below:

Select and Better, Prestige
and/or 1st Grade

Refers to flooring that will have the most uniform color and a longer average length.

Exclusive, Coastal, and
Other Mid-range Grades

Usually denotes more color variation with a shorter average length and can contain some small knots.

Traditional, Antique
or 3rd Grade Flooring

Refers to a floor with a wide range of color, the shortest average board length and contains more mineral streaks as well as small knots.
